The Company

Brandstorm Asia is a group of independent specialists with proven track records in brand strategy, brand management, research, management training, advertising and integrated communications.

Whilst we have extensive global experience, our base is Asia, with our head office in Hong Kong.

As appropriate for a particular project, we draw on our network of planners, moderators, trainers, researchers and management consultants from around the world, matching the best team to the project's needs.

Our clients are blue chip companies operating in or considering entry into Asia, as well as Asian companies building global brands.



Biographies

Anthony Pettifer – Founder and Managing Partner

Anthony has over 30 years experience in advertising, brand strategy and communications.

He began his career in London at J. Walter Thompson and Leo Burnett, progressing from the usual "suit" jobs of campaign and client management to an extensive involvement in global and regional brand development.

After 12 years in London he was posted to Leo Burnett Tokyo and has remained in Asia since.

He spent two years working for DDB as Regional Group Account Director based in Hong Kong before returning to Leo Burnett to hold a number of senior positions, including Executive Director of Brand Planning and Asia Pacific Director of New Business. During this time he was also deeply involved with re-engineering the agency to adapt to rapid change taking place in the industry.

In 1998 he left Leo Burnett to found Brandstorm Asia.

He has worked with many famous corporate and consumer brands such as:

Johnnie Walker, Marlboro, Nokia, Carlsberg, Volkswagen, Procter & Gamble, Coca-Cola, Dewar's, UK Government - COI/the Royal Air Force, Tourism Authority of Thailand (developing the brand strategy behind "Amazing Thailand"), Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals, STAR TV, MTV, Walt Disney, Hennessy, Belvedere, Glenmorangie, McDonald's, Sampoerna, Dji Sam Soe and AXA . In 2007 and 2008 he led the marketing team that launched three Indian television brands: premium news channel, NewsX, with an international award winning campaign; 9X, which rose to number three position in the General Entertainment category within 21 weeks from launch; and 9XM, India's and the world's leading Bollywood music channel.

He has appeared in numerous press articles on branding, been inteviewed on CNN and participated in live debate on India's National TV station, Doordarshan.

Anthony is also a Director of Brand Finance Hong Kong



James Mackay - Consultant

James Mackay has 15 years management background in marketing and distribution of consumer food & beverage goods in Asia. Prior to joining Brandstorm, he was Deputy General Manager for Jardine Caldbeck Taiwan.

His track record includes brand strategy, portfolio management and new product development projects, working with the Jardine Matheson group on behalf of major global brand owners such as Moet-Hennessy, Bacardi-Martini, Pernod-Ricard and Brown-Forman.

James brings a wealth of practical knowledge obtained from first-hand experience of building brands and driving successful projects in Asia region markets.

Particular areas of focus and in-depth knowledge are the implementation of creative and effective marketing activities in alternative / premium image distribution channels, ensuring their successful outcome by developing and aligning sales, distribution and marketing organisations.

In addition to his marketing experience, James has also successfully managed a local manufacturing project in the Philippines for a multinational joint venture.

Brands James has worked with include: Hennessy, Bacardi, Jack Daniel's, Bombay Sapphire, Glenfiddich, Wild Turkey, Dewar's, Jameson's, Martini, Moet & Chandon, Dom Perignon, Taylor's Port, Jacob's Creek, Lindeman's, Glenmorangie, Southern Comfort, Amarula, De Kuyper, e 33, Perrier, San Pelegrino.

James is also a Director of Brand Finance Hong Kong.



Peter Chan - Consultant

Peter has over 25 years of progressive management experience in marketing research, marketing, sales, business development and general management. In recent years, he was heavily involved in business turn-around through strategic brand management, corporate re-engineering and organizational development.

Peter began his career as a market researcher, first in an agency and later as the Regional Marketing Research Manager for R J Reynolds Tobacco International responsible for Hong Kong, the Philippines and Japan.

In 1986, Peter was internally transferred to RJR Nabisco China, focusing on the China market and taking care both the tobacco and food businesses. In the following 10 years, he succeeded in building up Salem brand equity, implemented two joint ventures, established six local offices and negotiated for a cigarette technical assistant/licensing project.

From 1998 to 2001, Peter stationed in Shanghai working as the Country General Manager for Chupa Chups, a Spanish WOFE confectionery company. He then returned to Hong Kong in 2002 taking up the position of Senior Vice President of Fairwood, responsible for the corporate strategic management and China business development. In both cases, Peter succeeded in the business turn-around, repositioning and rejuvenation of the brand and the re-engineering of the operation and organization.

From July 2004 Peter has also worked as a management consultant, providing consultation on business development, sales and distribution, training as well as corporate communication issues. He started working with Brandstorm in April 2005.

Peter is also Director of Strategy at Brand Finance Hong Kong



Alastair Monteith-Hodge – Consultant

As Managing Director of Edelman Public Relations Worldwide in both Hong Kong and Taiwan until April 2000, Alastair was responsible for adapting and introducing Edelman's reputation management, brandcare, and crisis management methodologies to Hong Kong and Taiwan. Companies for which he designed and implemented these programmes include British American Tobacco, HBO Asia, IBM, UPS, Procter & Gamble, Johnson & Johnson and Glaxo Wellcome.

Prior to joining Edelman, Alastair worked in senior positions at Hill & Knowlton in both Taiwan and Hong Kong.

While seconded to Hill & Knowlton Taiwan, he designed and oversaw the implementation of an innovative integrated communications programme for the launch and first year of operations for Far EasTone Telecommunications, the world's first dual band GSM network and now the leading private mobile operator in Taiwan.

He also has extensive experience in management training.

In addition to his work for Brandstorm Asia, Alastair is Managing Director of the strategic communications company Momentum54

Alastair is also a Director of Brand Finance Hong Kong



Kingsley Smith – Consultant

Kingsley has 35 years experience in market research, advertising and management development training.

He began his career in Oxford at A. C. Nielsen as a management trainee and progressed to Associate Director of Client Service. He worked in advertising in London for major agencies before going international with Grey in Japan. More international postings with Grey followed, before he moved to Hong Kong in 1990 to be Chairman and Managing Director of McCann Erickson.

In his advertising and research career, he worked on everything from airlines to detergents, furniture to cognac, and with clients such as Unilever, Procter & Gamble, Coca Cola, Cathay Pacific, Bank of America.

In May 1994, Kingsley established Management Development Asia-Pacific - mda - based in Hong Kong. mda works with leaders of service-oriented businesses who are committed to maximising the competitive advantage they get from their people.

Kingsley is also an author of business books. Publications include, Marketing for Small Business, and a Negotiation Skills handbook. A companion Presentation Skills handbook is currently being printed.



Jayang (Jay) Jhaveri – Consultant

Jay has over 11 years of business experience as a successful entrepreneur, corporate strategist and information management consultant in Asia, North America and Europe in industries ranging from media/entertainment, to e-commerce, to financial services.

As entrepreneur, he co-founded and built OneAsia.com, (an online retailer of Asian entertainment products). In February 2000, Tom.com, an associate company of the Hutchison Whampoa group in Hong Kong, acquired the founders' interest in the company.

As corporate strategist and IT consultant, he has advised a number of clients on the development of new IT-enabled revenue streams and ventures, including HSBC Private Bank, a US-based data storage solutions company, and a chain of food and beverage outlets in Asia. He was also instrumental in the design and development of a satellite radio channel for Star TV.

On the training side he has devised IT training programmes for executives at Merrill Lynch and Microsoft Hong Kong.

Jay speaks six languages, including Hindi and Cantonese, and has an MBA from London Business School. He is also a Director of Axonus Limited.



Richard Gocher - Consultant

In over 25 years of business experience, Richard has worked for advertising agencies Ogilvy & Mather, Leo Burnett and FCB. He was also VP Sales and Marketing at pioneering satellite broadcaster Star TV.

For seven years he ran his own advertising and design company in Hong Kong.

He has specialised in travel and services businesses, having run the worldwide Cathay Pacific Airways account in the ’80s at Leo Burnett and also The Regent, Shangri La and Inter-Continental Hotels accounts in the ’80s and ’90s.

He also has extensive experience in management training.



Julia Brown - Consultant, Brandstorm Hong Kong

Julia has 20 years experience in design and communications, the last 15 years in Hong Kong. In 1990 she co-founded the award winning group Brushstroke Design, which was subsequently purchased by FCB.

Currently, in addition to her work for Brandstorm Hong Kong she is Creative Director and Partner of its affiliate Orijen Ltd.

She has worked in both strategic marketing and creative roles on a number of brands including Cathay Pacific, FedEx, American International Underwriters, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals, InterContinental Hotels, The Peninsula Group and Star Group (India).



Bella Dobie - Consultant, Brandstorm Hong Kong

Bella has 22 years experience in design and communications, the last 20 years in Hong Kong. In 1990 she co-founded Brushstroke Design with Julia Brown.

Currently, in addition to her work for Brandstorm Hong Kong she is Manager and Partner of its affiliate Orijen Ltd.

She has worked in account management for a number of clients including HSBC, Standard Chartered Bank, Hong Kong Land, Swire Properties, Jardine Fleming, Jardine Pacific, General Motors, Saggio and Ion Global.



Brandstorm Hong Kong has an affiliation with Orijen Ltd., who are specialists in strategic marketing communications and design and with whom we have worked as part of a joint team on a number of client projects.
